How to Calculate Recipe Cost: Ingredients, Labor & Packaging

Move from package prices to a verified batch and per-item cost without hiding labor or packaging.

Start with purchase facts

Record each receipt price, package quantity, and unit. Convert only compatible units, then calculate used cost as package price multiplied by used quantity and divided by package quantity.

Complete the batch

Add ingredient cost, paid labor, packaging, and a documented overhead allocation. Divide by actual sellable yield, not the optimistic number written before baking.

Worked example

Educational example: $12 ingredients + $18 labor + $4 packaging = $34 for 24 sellable cookies, or $1.42 each after rounding. That is cost, not the final selling price or profit.

Avoid the common misses

Do not mix grams with milliliters without density, omit cleanup time, or divide by units that broke or were kept as samples. Recheck the arithmetic when any source price changes.

Put it into practice.

Use your own verified receipts and label every example as an estimate.
