How to Include Cake Decorating Time in Your Price

Separate base production from design work so detailed decoration is paid instead of absorbed.

Separate standard and custom work

Keep the base cake, filling, finish, board, and box reusable. Add sketching, color matching, modelled pieces, piping, setup, and client changes as visible custom labor.

Worked example

Educational example: 1.75 decorating hours at $18 per hour adds $31.50. If special supports cost $6 and delivery adds $12, the custom scope adds $49.50 before profit.

Time the whole task

Measure preparation and cleanup around decoration, not only the minutes when the piping bag is moving. Use a reasonable repeatable rate and update it deliberately.

State the revision boundary

Name what artwork and number of revisions the quote includes. A new design after approval should produce a dated quote version, not invisible unpaid work.

Put it into practice.

Use your own verified receipts and label every example as an estimate.
